Where Stray Furniture Finds Its Forever Home

Monthly Archives: September 2013

I just wanted to write a quick post and show some small projects that I have completed.
I saw this on Pinterest and loved the idea. It’s from Beyondthepicketfence. Blogspot.com. Once again, I forgot to get a before pic, it was a brownish color.

I found this set of urns, but unfortunately, there was only one lid. Here is the before pic.

I love these! They would look great in my house 🙂

I’ve been collecting frames and finally got around to panting them.

We had been wanting to find a table and matching chairs for quite a while and finally found it! There were five chairs so the oddball chair got a different makeover. It got the Barcelona Orange treatment. What better color when you live in University of Tennessee Vol country?!?!

We painted the chairs white and the base of the table white. The top of the table was painted a mixture of Graphite and French Linen. I love how fresh they look now!

We got this French Provincial Dresser a while back. All the hardware was removed and we were told it was inside the drawers (they were taped together so we didn’t check). I decided to start painting on it the other day and discovered there was NO HARDWARE! Ugh!

My friend had found a bunch of French Provincial pulls but they didn’t quite fit. I then began my hunt for hardware. I decided on some knobs instead of pulls. If you have ever shopped for knobs/pulls you can easily spend a fortune!

I was so anxious to start painting and fighting the sun going down that I didn’t take a before pic. Sorry! It was drab, trust me.

I painted the body of the dresser in Louis Blue and the drawers in Old White. I painted the insides of the drawers in watermelon. I love how the color pops when you open the drawer!

Since the dresser wasn’t as curvy as most French Provincial dressers I thought it needed more pizazz. I found a stencil that I thought would bring some interest to the top.

I also added some silver gilding wax just to highlight some areas on the front. I thought it tied in nicely with the new pulls.

I found these great vintage stacking stools at an estate sale. I loved the lines of them despite their hideous color.

I knew these vintage stools could look modern with a new paint job.

I decided on a bright color combination since I was keeping these for myself! I love Barcelona orange and Florence!

I don’t have any finished projects to share with you so I thought I would share my favorite artist’s quotes. They each inspire or speak to me in some way:

Here are the two other chairs that were painted.

The fabric was painted with French Linen and the woodwork was painted with Louis Blue.

The stencil was added using Graphite. It takes four hands to stencil on a curved surface!!

I LOVE THEM!!

I had read about painting fabric with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and was dying to try it! I found three of these chairs at the thrift store. I decided to do two the same and sell as a matching pair and do the third one different.

I have to admit, I was skeptical even though I had read about it in Annie’s book and other blogs. I had also watched a demo on You Tube. Nevertheless, I pushed through and started. I sprayed the fabric down with water to moisten it quite a bit and then applied a layer of paint. The next day I repeated the process. The third day I applied a layer of paint only, without diluting or spraying the fabric. The following day you are ready to apply clear wax. After applying the wax the fabric looks like chintz. It’s not crunchy and the paint doesn’t peel off. The fabric did stiffen a bit but not very much.

Here is a before pic of one of the chairs. They were identical and the pic makes them look much better than they did in person. The fabric was a bit stained and the woodwork had to be repainted on all of the chairs.

Here is a picture after one coat of paint. I only took a pic of the Barcelona Orange since it would be hard to tell the color change from the original to the French Linen.

This is what the fabric looks like after waxing.
